About the Seán MacBride Fellowship
The Seán MacBride Fellowship forms part of the broader Ireland Fellows Programme and is currently open for applications. It is aimed at high-performing professionals who have demonstrated leadership potential and a clear commitment to advancing development in their home country.
Selected candidates will undertake a one-year, fully funded master’s degree at a leading Irish university. Beyond academic excellence, fellows gain exposure to international perspectives, practical policy insights, and long-lasting professional networks that extend far beyond the classroom.
The fellowship honors the legacy of Seán MacBride, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, human rights champion, and former Irish Minister for External Relations. His work, including his role as UN High Commissioner for Namibia during its journey toward independence, continues to shape Ireland’s commitment to justice, diplomacy, and international cooperation.
Through this initiative, Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs—working through the Irish Embassy in Lusaka—seeks to deepen the longstanding relationship between Ireland and Namibia while investing in future leaders who will carry forward MacBride’s values.
Notably, one fellowship slot is reserved specifically for Namibian applicants pursuing studies in international relations, human rights, international law, or conflict resolution. This reflects Ireland’s strategic support for Namibia’s development priorities and institutional capacity building.
